Samedi/Saturday 18.01.2014

Puis Jens part travailler jusqu’à midi.

At breakfast , we share a table with a German. We know a little because he has good bread
( he buy it himself) and he offered some to Jens yesterday. He works for the World Bank and is on a mission here to help with agricultural projects. He travels a lot in the country and said that in the mountainous north, people are really poor .
Jens then went to work until noon.
We booked a taxi for today and tomorrow . One day costs about the same as a trip from home to the airport by taxi in Norway (correction: it coasts half!). The taxi took Jens to work this morning and picks me up at 10 am to take me to the zoo. I did not find it on the map, I do not know where he is. I ask the driver if it's far: yes, 25 km ! Distances are really huge here. We drive to the zoo and park the car. The driver comes with me and suggests that I take a " buggy ", the zoo is very large and that's a lot of walking. So we take a buggy. When I want to pay, I discover that I don’t have any money! I have to borrow some money from the driver. The buggy stops at each different animal. Thus we see lion, tiger, giraffe, bear (the poor, it is hot), crocodile, elephant etc . The great attraction of the zoo was the penguins but they are all dead. The buggy tour lasts 45 minutes and we drive directly to the institute to pick Jens up. Our plan is to have lunch at the lake where I went with Lars and the students. We drive further, half an hour, and arrive there. It's beautiful and very quiet, there is nobody. We have lunch the three of us, the driver, Jens and me. After lunch, Jens and I go for a walk over the dam. People are fishing and kids come and say hello.
We're back in town and go to see a market. It sells everything and there is a lot of people.
Finally we return to the hotel . Jens takes a nap and I do the blog.

The taxi takes us to dinner, Jens asks if the driver knows a restaurant where you can dine outside, it is nice now, not so hot. He dives us to a nice restaurant, apparently a busy place on a Saturday night. We dine well for 20,000 kyat, 20 dollars.
After dinner, we walk a little, it is a living area, where there are people! Many people dine in tiny restaurants. A funny thing here: these small, simple restaurant has plastic furniture, but child size! The Burmese are neither high nor heavy.
There must be a lot of competition between restaurants and some have a TV to attract customers, all this outside, on a square.

The driver takes us back to the hotel around 8:30 pm.
